I started from May 23th, and finished on Aug 29th, but I still work as part-time after semester started. The schedule is really flexible; you can have time off if you told them in advance. The office is in Wilmington, DE.
I had been Wilmington couple times before the internship; it is a small city, but the riverfront is pretty, and it has some nice restaurants at riverfront.
I feel like it is more like a entry level job rather than a internship, I help them on their real project which due at the end of September, and my boss is really nice, help me learn a lot. I work in asset liability management group, so there is certain amount of Finance involved, and I don’t have much knowledge about Finance, but my boss always teach me patiently, so it is a nice environment for starter and the work is practical.
Actuarial Modeling I and II help a lot, because I work for a life insurance company, in which a lot of concept we get from class is really applicable in practical work, such as APV of annuity and insurance.
They told me this might not be as easy as an internship, because they were experiencing some transition work, so they need some help, which I am totally no problem with that, because I would love to have more hands on experience.
I am not assigned any special projects; I help with their real project, so we use Actuarial software “Prophet” to perform cash flow testing.
They don’t have much supplemental benefits, you get salary raise when you pass exams, but I think that is same for most of the companies.
I like pretty much everything. I am the most inexperienced member of the team, most of my coworkers are already fellows of SOA, but they are really nice and friendly to me, and I feel free to ask any question to them. In terms of my work, I help them on real work, so I got the flavor of what the real work like. We have a picnic about the end of summer, and within our team, we host a baby shower for one of our coworker, and there is another one coming in September, we are like a family. My only complaint is that they don’t provide housing for interns, but it is close to Amtrak station. I would recommend this internship.
