Adapting to a new city was tough at first because I didn’t know anyone, but Chicago is an amazing city and co-workers were extremely helpful and friendly so, it made the transition easier. I worked on Policy Checking, Meetings (Sales, Internal, Underwriters, Clients, etc.), Communication with underwriters, Assisting in marketing accounts, Revising databases, Training classes. My classes did better prepare me. I knew what many policies were which helped me in checking them and catching mistakes in policies. I understood dialogue in meetings and could participate in discussions because of background knowledge. Overall, my background knowledge from classes gave me a great platform to start from this summer. The interview process was overwhelming because of the scale of the company, but once I began my internship, you seem to forget how big the company is because co-workers were so genuine and down-to-earth.
During the internship, I was given a few projects, listed below:
Marketing Interim Report – I kept track of the dialogue between us and the underwriters during the marketing process, recording any inclinations, quotes, or declinations as needed. I also communicated with underwriters throughout this process.
Market Contact List – I updated the contacts for all carriers Marsh contacts in its marketing efforts. In completing this project, I had the pleasure of interacting with co-workers and getting to know them better. I also communicated with many underwriters from various carriers.
Summer Risk Analyst Project – My team was given the task of creating and presenting a presentation on the Non-Admitted and Reinsurance Reform Act. My team consisted of colleagues from New York, Atlanta, and Los Angeles. Not only did we conquer the feat of completing this project via communicating in every possible way but face-to-face (email, phone, conference calls, etc.), but we completed the project successfully. It was so successful that we were awarded the best intern project, beating out four other teams.
The supplemental benefit were happy hours and lunches. All in all, none of the negatives outweighed any of the positive aspects of my experience so, I don’t feel they are even worth mentioning. I would recommend this internship to someone else.
