Mercedes Powers

Major: Risk Management & Insurance and International Business
Graduation Date: May 2012
Company: FM Global
Location: Malvern, PA
Date: May 23rd - August 12th

Mercedes interned with FM Global this past summer in a twelve week program than focused on exposure and education.  FM Global’s goal was to have her and the other interns be able to enter the workforce with a good understanding of the company, the industry, building relationships, and fitting into an office environment comfortably following their internship program.  They also stressed the importance of their value proposition.  Mercedes’ RMI classes prepared her for the internship position academically, but she felt that social skills were equally as valuable when having to communicate with people from various backgrounds.

During Mercedes time with FM Global, she participated in several special projects.  She audited the branch’s top twenty-three accounts, representing approximately 50% of the branch premium, and provided detailed feedback regarding strategic direction of each account personally to each Account Manager.  After attending the Business Risk Consulting Group’s (BRCG) Business Continuity workshop, she created a unique PowerPoint detailing the benefits of the BRCG to be utilized in presentations and stewardships to “sell the advantage” to existing and prospective client-owners.  In addition, Mercedes created three brochures on specific engineering topics to be shared with and used by client-owners.  Another project involved adding feedback and creating critical PowerPoint slides for NJSC&U member school Stewardship and Client Service Plan, which was recognized during the presentation and appreciated by the client-owner, Chuck O’Loughlin, and Client Service Team.  She also created a solar panel exposure spreadsheet for the Chief Technical Engineering Specialist and Group Manager for Account Engineers.

Mercedes also enjoyed the additional benefits of interning with FM Global which include more than thirty free lunches (three specifically for her), a two day trip to Rhode Island to visit the research campus, a two day trip to Baltimore to attend the Business Continuity Conference, an invitation to the FM Global Christmas party, and involvement in the softball team and fantasy football league.  While these perks certainly did not hurt, Mercedes mostly enjoyed her time at FM Global due to the company’s genuine goodwill.  She feels that part of the reason she excelled what due to the personal values she held in alliance with FM Global such as hard work, ethics, loyalty, and helping others.  Because of this, Mercedes would certainly recommend this company to other students.
