Provide a General Description of the Internship. Include daily tasks completed, the company and its employees, and any other information.
It was a 10 week internship in which I worked 37.5 hours per week but this didn't necessarily need to be 7.5 hours each day, my supervisor allowed me to shift around hours to accommodate travel. My manager wanted me to experience a real working environment and allotted 8 projects to me this summer ranging from updating Workers Compensation Trend Report to an emerging risk research and presentation. The atmosphere was fairly relaxed, with a business casual dress code and casual Fridays.

Did you have a mentor?

If so, how did he/she help you during your internship?

Did you feel your RMI/AS classes better prepared you for the internship?
Yes, the excel projects that Professor Moore gives in his classes definitely exposed me to excel applications which I was able to incorporate with my projects. Introduction to Risk was helpful in regards to understanding of insurance terminology.

Interviewing/Hiring Process Comments:
I met them at the Intern Reception and was invited to a 90 minutes interview at their Exton office one week later. The interview was with 4 Actuaries in different planning lines and was fairly casual and relaxed. I got my offer 3 working days after my interview.

Were you assigned any special projects? If so please describe.
I had a couple of huge projects, two of those being a mix of business report which looked at the profitability of the different business lines, I used their plan loss ratios and actual loss ratios to predict the impact of the business lines for future endeavors. I also created a workers compensation trend report for 3 of the business lines and presented to Senior Actuaries.

What were the supplemental benefits besides the pay? (Internship Lunches, Housing, Sports Games, Happy Hours, etc.)
There was a day of giving held separately for the interns for volunteer work, a happy hour to celebrate any exams passed by actuaries at our office and before I started there was a company picnic. There was also an intern day where majority of the interns met at the Stamford office. Typically on Fridays we would play board games at lunch time.

Describe the company's internship program(atmosphere, work load, work, housing, outside work activities, etc.).
The internship had weekly lunch and learn programs about XL Catlin's different business lines which was lead by the chief actuaries of those lines. The company culture, specifically in the Exton office, is extremely friendly and open. Every member of the actuarial team was willing to help and listened to any questions I had.

Was the internship what you expected after the interviewing/hiring process?

Were you provided time off besides the weekend?
My supervisor was extremely flexible with my work schedule, and allowed me to request time off if I provided enough notice with a rational reason.

If you had to relocate, describe the process of adapting to a new city.
