Provide a General Description of the Internship. Include daily tasks completed, the company and its employees, and any other information.
Work was 40 hours a week and I started at 8:30-5:00 PM with one-hour lunch break. I reviewed new business submissions to determine eligibility and released quotes once my quote was reviewed and approved by an underwriter. I worked with agents and brokers directly to clarify on coverage, underwriting decisions, and submission eligibility. I processed re-quotes and midterm changes (MTC). I pulled loss runs, violation reports, built underwriting reports, specific building rates, TIV (total insured value), and ITV (insurance to value) for day care renewals. I assisted in determining renewal premium, rates, and deductibles, for high loss accounts (LRERS). I worked on policy issuance. I worked on reassigning accounts to appropriate underwriters.

Did you have a mentor?

If so, how did he/she help you during your internship?
The guy that sat next to me, he was an Underwriter 1. My manager was not around much due to being busy and working from home a lot. So my mentor was kind of the one who gave me all my work and made sure I was busy. I would still report to my manager for days off and things of that nature but my mentor was more of the one who showed me around. He taught me how to do basically everything I know now and how to navigate through all the programs that PHLY uses.

Did you feel your RMI/AS classes better prepared you for the internship?
I would say yes. It did in the aspect that my Industry terminology was a lot higher then the rest of my peers. I think my multitasking skills and time management skills were better due to how the RMI classes are ran.

Interviewing/Hiring Process Comments:
I went to Industry to Campus event night before Internship reception. I then interviewed with the recruiting director at our internship reception the next day. I then received an email that I had two interviews at their office a couple weeks after the internship reception. I then had one more phone interview a couple days following my onsite interviews. The Hiring Director called me an hour to two hours after my last phone interview and took the job.

Were you assigned any special projects? If so please describe.
Yes, there were specific things my manager assigned me to see if I could handle such as reviewing app submissions to see if we should insure or not. Then I would sit with an underwriter to see if my decisions were correct or not. This was something no one else was doing as well as being in contact with agents outside of PHLY. The other would be we all had an internship project with groups. This was to see if we could handle multitasking, time management, teamwork, etc.

What were the supplemental benefits besides the pay? (Internship Lunches, Housing, Sports Games, Happy Hours, etc.)
There weren't any company wide Happy Hours but some departments had them. We did have a kick ball team that would meet at a bar on Tuesdays then go play after work. Once a month we had department lunches so we would get free lunch. The last Friday of the month was bagel Fridays that was free as well. We were given an hour for lunch so I used that time to study or workout if I wanted.

Describe the company's internship program(atmosphere, work load, work, housing, outside work activities, etc.).
Atmosphere was very laid back and chill. No ones micro managing you or over your shoulder while working. We had three days of orientation, then once a week we did sessions to learn about HR, Claims, Risk Department, etc. There were shadowing sessions available to sit with someone in a department you were curious about. Also were Web-seminars (WebEx) to learn about Excel and things of that nature if you were interested. They also had something called TMNA U that teaches you about the programs you would be using in your own department.

Was the internship what you expected after the interviewing/hiring process?

Were you provided time off besides the weekend?
Holidays, but other then that we could receive time off, we just needed to let our manager or HR know before hand.

If you had to relocate, describe the process of adapting to a new city.
