Risk Management
Spring 2017

FM Global
Malvern, PA

Provide a General Description of the Internship. Include daily tasks completed, the company and its employees, and any other information.
Daily tasks included field engineering visits, recaping the visits with the field engineer. Working on a flood emergency response plan template project that lasted the entirety of my internship. Worked with the account manager on some of his accounts including preparing stewardships, client service plans, and situational analysts. Worked with the operations vice president on a capstone type project to ensure that the strategies in the situational analyses were communicated in the client service plan in order to drive annual risk improvement.

Did you have a mentor?
Yes

If so, how did he/she help you during your internship?
My mentor made sure that I had enough work to do, but also made sure that all my questions were answered and that I was getting good exposure to their operations. He made sure that I was learning, and made time to sit down with me to go over the things I learned, and provide more insight if necessary.

Did you feel your RMI/AS classes better prepared you for the internship?
Yes, I was able to pick up on a lot of the vocab words I learned in my 3502 class.

Interviewing/Hiring Process Comments:
I received the email from the listserv letting me know that FM Global wanted to interview me for their internship position. I did my first round interview at Alter when I let the interviewers know that I had another offer on the table, so they gave me an offer the next day.

Were you assigned any special projects? If so please describe.
Flood emergency response template - I created this for the field engineers to give to clients to fill out so the client had a documented plan in place in the event of a flood. I also worked with the operations vice president on a capstone type project to ensure that the strategies in the situational analyses were communicated in the client service plan in order to drive annual risk improvement.

What were the supplemental benefits besides the pay? (Internship Lunches, Housing, Sports Games, Happy Hours, etc.)
Yes, happy hours were provided as well as many free lunches.

Describe the company's internship program(atmosphere, work load, work, housing, outside work activities, etc.).
The internship program was very flexible, which allowed me the ability to see a variety of different things. There was no set schedule, so I was able to attend anything that came up. There was some online training that went along with some of the core elements of FM Global. The workload was very manageable, and the company as a whole stressed the importance of work/life balance, so I was stressed out with too much to do.

Was the internship what you expected after the interviewing/hiring process?
Yes

Were you provided time off besides the weekend?
Yes, I received two paid vacation days.

If you had to relocate, describe the process of adapting to a new city.
N/A
