Sigma Chapter Intern Testimonials

Sean Preis
Risk Management,
Spring 2017

Philadelphia PA, USA

Provide a General Description of the Internship. Include daily tasks completed, the company and its employees, and any other information.
Assisted underwriters with their daily tasks and quoted new business specifically in the cyber field. Worked daily with other interns on a project to increase cross-division sales at the point of submission by utilizing Salesforce and other tools.

Did you have a mentor?

If so, how did he/she help you during your internship?
I shadowed my mentor for my first week to get a feel for systems and day-to-day operations in the Philadelphia office. When he had extra work he would send it to me and I was able to work from start to finish on quoting new business. He was always available to answer questions, and spoke very candidly, giving me a greater understanding of AIG's operations.

Did you feel your RMI/AS classes better prepared you for the internship?
Yes, I was able to recognize industry jargon and communicate effectively during meetings.

Interviewing/Hiring Process Comments:
One round with three interviewers after the intern reception. Asked questions related to how I would handle certain situations and what interests me about the insurance industry.

Were you assigned any special projects? If so please describe.
I rotated between three divisions in the financial lines department and each assigned a project.

What were the supplemental benefits besides the pay? (Internship Lunches, Housing, Sports Games, Happy Hours, etc.)
Many happy hours, lunches with brokers and clients, and a city-wide insurance softball league with weekly games and an end of season tournament.

Describe the company's internship program(atmosphere, work load, work, housing, outside work activities, etc.).
There were three days of formal training in New York before we reported to our work offices. There were some structured aspects such as a team project between interns, but a lot of leeway to ask questions and learn about other topics that interested me.

Was the internship what you expected after the interviewing/hiring process?

Were you provided time off besides the weekend?

If you had to relocate, describe the process of adapting to a new city.
