Provide a General Description of the Internship. Include daily tasks completed, the company and its employees, and any other information.
The usual work day would begin at 8:30AM and I would usually check in with my manager for any needed work/help. I would assist the underwriters by issuing and mailing their policies to the agents, PHLY does a great job of making sure that they are issued within a week so being on top of this is crucial. I have worked on several projects for my manager from completing 50-100 loss ratio exception reports for each account to organizing endorsement references.

Did you have a mentor?

If so, how did he/she help you during your internship?
He helped immensely throughout my internship as well as my part-time position throughout this fall semester. For every question I had, whether it was how to quote a policy or even how to set automatic replies for when I am not in the office, he was there every single step of the way.

Did you feel your RMI/AS classes better prepared you for the internship?
Definitely! My managers were actually quite impressed when I knew the definitions of the terms they were referring to. It saved them time and also elevated my overall impression.

Interviewing/Hiring Process Comments:
The interview/hiring process was fairly simple, they want to see someone that is a well-rounded person. PHLY wants to hire an individual that has a friendly, likeable personality because the company in general is an outgoing, engaging, and community friendly organization. I came to the home office for an in person interview after meeting with the recruiter at the intern reception. The interview was an hour and a half long, which consisted of 30 minute interviews with a manager of each underwriting department.

Were you assigned any special projects? If so please describe.
At the beginning of the internship we were told that we had to come up with a product that PHLY has not yet but would potentially insure and market/present it to the executive board. I must say this was the most intimidating yet most educational project I have ever done. My group learned every aspect of what incorporating a new product consists of from the potential claims, marketing efforts, underwriting guidelines to how we should present ourselves in front of the CEO.

What were the supplemental benefits besides the pay? (Internship Lunches, Housing, Sports Games, Happy Hours, etc.)
We have a bagel day on the last Friday of every month, healthy picnics to encourage healthy behavior, marathons and triathlons, and a beautiful gym right next door for free!

Describe the company's internship program(atmosphere, work load, work, housing, outside work activities, etc.).
The atmosphere was so lively and uplifting. All the summer associates got along so well, we really became long term friends after this internship. We were given excel, WebEx, and presentation skills training. PHLY is huge on community service, I was one of the two captains for our fundraising efforts to raise $5,000 for an organization called Cradles to Crayons. We held bake sales, 50/50 raffles, and a Jeans Week for the whole company and raised $5,000 in total! Work load was a good amount, although, towards the end it got a bit stressful because of our final group presentation that took up a lot of our time.

Was the internship what you expected after the interviewing/hiring process?

Were you provided time off besides the weekend?
I did not request any time off, but I know there were many other interns that took days/weeks off because of a vacation. PHLY is big on a work/life balance, they want you to enjoy every part of your summer.

If you had to relocate, describe the process of adapting to a new city.
