2017 OWLympiad Math Competition

May 15, 2017 | 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM | Temple University

The Department of Risk, Insurance, and Healthcare Management & the Sigma Chapter of Gamma Iota Sigma at Temple University are proud to host the 8th Annual OWLympiad Math Competition! We would like to thank both the Casualty Actuarial Society and the Travelers Companies for their generous support.

The OWLympiad Math Competition is an opportunity to engage local high school students, in the midst of their college search, and expose them to Actuarial Science as a career choice. Actuaries specialize in the evaluation of insurance and financial risk. They hold positions of responsibility with insurance companies, consulting firms, investment banks, government regulatory organizations, and government insurance programs. Temple University offers one of the most distinguished Actuarial Science programs in North America and has been recognized by the Society of Actuaries as a Center of Actuarial Excellence (CAE), one of only thirty institutions to receive this honor.

The competition will consist of a 50 minute, multiple choice exam, a “24” Math Card Game Competition, and a “Quizzo” style lightning round. The exam will test topics ranging from basic algebra to calculus and statistics and is to be completed as a team. All teams are required to stay for the entirety of the event. Pizza and refreshments will be provided for lunch and all participants will receive a 2017 OWLympiad T-shirt.

Each student from the winning team will be awarded $100!

The deadline for team registration will be Monday, April 17, 2017. There is no cost to attend the event, although transportation and parking costs will not be covered. Please note registration will close when space is at full capacity. If space reaches capacity before the registration deadline date (Monday, April 17, 2017), registration will be closed and no more teams will be allowed to register.

Past Participants' Testimonials

  • "I always like attending the Math Contest at Temple. The students really enjoy it and the actual contest is run quite well. I like the various formats for each of the rounds. I also enjoy the campus tour. Each year something new seems to pop up. I hope we can attend this year."

-- Jerry Colapinto, AP Calculus Teacher, Siemens AP Teacher of the Year, Holy Ghost Preparatory School

  • "The Temple Owlympiad is one of my students’ favorite contests of the year. It is creative, challenging and fun all at the same time. The students in the Risk, Insurance, & Healthcare Management program at Temple put on an extremely well-run event that we plan on attending year after year."

-- Eric Reid, AP Statistics Teacher, Methacton High School

  • "The Owlympiad has become a go-to competition for us. Participation rewards the hard work our top junior Math Team members put in all year preparing for the AMCs, AIME, and USA(J)MO, along with other local math competitions. Additionally, my students really benefit from the exposure to learning about Actuarial Science. It's a field uniquely suited to their math acumen but one rarely considered, because they know very little about it. My students take pride in preparing for the Owlympiad and in defending our school's record. And they never complain about having pizza for lunch!"

-- Carrie Dickmann, AT Program Advisor, Unionville H.S.
